Bracelet campaign to help fight AIDS

Abid Virani has lofty goals.

The University of Guelph student, the founder of Student Reach International, wants to raise about $25 million over the next few years to help stop the transmission of HIV-AIDS in the tiny African nation of Lesotho. He is certain it can be done, and his mentor, Dr. Anne-Marie Zajdlik, believes he will achieve it.

Student Reach has launched a new fundraising program aimed at reaching the student population across Canada. In conjunction with the Masai for Africa campaign's Bracelet of Hope initiative, Student Reach has introduced the Box of Hope, a kit students of all ages can use to start their own Bracelet of Hope campaigns at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels.

"We've got five post-secondary schools so far, and hopefully another few will start in September, and we have a number of high schools and elementary schools all over," said Virani, 18, who noted that several universities, including Wilfrid Laurier and UW are on board.

On May 4, 2009, Abid Virani spoke to a large portion of the junior campus at LaurenHill Academy about the Bracelet of Hope. The speaking engagement highlighted Virani’s personal experiences and featured a short video clip of Dr. Anne-Marie Zajdlik speaking about her experiences. With the combination, Virani urged students to see the hope in these stories. Students volunteered and shared their hopes with the group, which included everything from putting a stop to sex-slavery, access to clean water for everyone and an end to racism. The students enthusiastically screamed, “Change!”

The school’s student council and student body are aiming to have a bracelet on the wrist of every student in the junior campus at the end of the year. We wish them the best of luck!

The Box of Hope Campaign was developed early this year. Today, students of all ages have engaged in the campaign by wearing red and white beaded bracelets. Launching most recently was LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent, Quebec. The largest fundraising group thus far has been the Victoria University Student Administrative Council, bringing it $3180.85. We are eager to see the campaign grow in September and are actively recruiting new clubs and schools to join.
