Workshops: Reach Out

The second step is to assist each and every student to take action and share his or her passion with others. Students will be able to take a hands-on, interactive approach in learning how to make their voices heard in their community. They will make commitments to themselves and their cause.

Student Reach will provide students with opportunities to join various humanitarian initiatives, as well as provide the tools to become involved in one of Reach’s various campaigns. Throughout this process, students will find opportunities to improve leadership skills and will also find that as youth, they are capable of provoking immense change themselves. We encourage students to raise awareness, to be innovative, and to be empowering.

Although reaching out can be complicated, it is at this point in the workshop that we share our belief in simplicity. We help them realize that reaching out includes picking up a can and recycling it, holding a door open, and various other small acts of kindness.

Example Activity:

Students will be given the time to sift through various newspapers that may be local, national or internationally based. They are asked to find an article that simply interests them and to be able to explain why they chose it. No matter what this article may be (from the latest hockey stats to displacement in Northern Uganda), Student Reach is able to show the students how any issue may have suffered through injustices, and how youth did or can change it’s future. This allows the students to learn that reaching out is about sharing information with your peers. Sometimes, sharing knowledge can be frustrating and this activity is to help them build those skills.
